Click here to Register for the eventIn our first several years, Sierra STEM has led a number of programs. For example:
- a backpacking trip in the Hetch Hetchy area of Yosemite National Park focused on the political and ecological history of water in California;
- an overnight camp focused on what wilderness experiences can teach us about neuroscience (e.g., neurochemistry of technology addiction, nonhuman sensory systems, the emerging science behind mindfulness);
- a series of day-hikes into four of the Eastern Sierra's designated Wilderness Areas to explore philosophical and ecological aspects of what makes a "wilderness";
- a weeklong DEI-themed road-trip down US 395 exploring "conceptions of community" (featuring learnings about ecological communities, the fight for formal governmental recognition of Native American tribes, and culminating with a visit to Manzanar National Historic Site)
Before launching Sierra STEM, I spent over a decade as a scientific researcher and interdisciplinary STEM educator at the high school and college levels.
My hopes for WRMC:
- I am eager to talk to educators and program directors about what kinds of services are appealing to them in this educational landscape and what kinds of risk management practices they expect/demand/hope for from vendors with whom they contract.
- I am eager to talk to outdoor/conservation educators about best practices in risk management and about what emerging trends I should be keeping up with.
- Does anything I wrote in my “bio” sound cool to you? Let’s connect! I would love to talk to kindred spirits, and we will be hiring at least 2 more full-time positions in 2024/2025.
Looking forward to connecting with you!
