Avinash Patil, MD is an assistant professor of Emergency Medicine at Stanford. He graduated from UC Davis studying Physiology and Economics. After taking a few years off to work in the outdoor industry, he went to Washington University in St. Louis for medical school and completed residency and a fellowship in Global Health at Loma Linda University. Avi has worked in the outdoor industry for over 20 years guiding whitewater rafting trips and teaching swift water rescue. He has worked in outdoor program development for youth and in risk-assessment and management. Currently, he works as a river guide on the Grand Canyon leading educational trips for PhD students studying the Colorado River. He serves as the medical director for Outward Bound California, RacingThePlanet, Ripcord Travel Protection, Sierra Rescue, and the Athenian School. Avi has worked as an expedition doctor on all 7 continents and coordinates international medical evacuations. In his free time, he loves to run rivers, race sailboats, mountain bike, trail run, surf, snowboard, and play the guitar.
